Research
There are many faculty members and graduate students conducting research on sexuality and gender. Here are some of the areas currently being researched at UGA.
George Contini, Assistant Professor, Department of Theatre and Film Studies
Current research is on Julian Eltinge, a vaudevillian and film star, who made his fortune doing female impersonation. Therefore it would be of special interest to anyone studying performance or gender studies.
Bob Hill, Associate Professor, Department of Lifelong Education, Administration and Policy
As an Out associate professor of adult education at the University of Georgia his work centers on anti-oppression research and education. Areas of specialty include lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer issues in education; Queer theory; activism-as-the-practice of adult education; public policy; international adult education (especially for sexual orientation rights and gender justice); and environmental adult education. Dr. Hill engages with those on the social margins, like sex-workers, sexual minorities, self-identified radical environmentalists, people of color, radical women and other trouble-makers. His most recent work has been with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a specialist in sexual orientation and gender identity, and on environment education. He is especially interested in new formulations of democracy and citizenship. Since 2001, Dr. Hill has taught a number of courses related to LGBTQ topics, such as LGBTQ Studies in Adult Education, LGBTQ Issues in K-12 Schooling, LGBTQ Issues in Organizational Settings, and Queer Theory. He was a member of the team that designed the UGA Office of Institutional Diversity (OID), as well as Chaired the group that conducted a campus climate survey at UGA. He is on the College of Education, Dean’s Council on Diversity. Dr. Hill is the Vice President for North America on the International Council for Adult Education where he promotes our rights for dignity and full social inclusion.
Corey W. Johnson, Assitant Professor, Department of Counseling and Human Development Services Recreation Program
Dr. Corey W. Johnson's primary line of qualitative inquiry investigates gender and sexual orientation in the cultural context of leisure (media, bars, etc.) and recreation services (municipalities, hospitals, etc). Constructed along lines of gender and/or sexual orientation, examination of leisure and recreation services often reveal the effects of marginalization and the power of resistance, thus fueling a justification for the existence of alternative settings. Equally important, this research provides important insight into the hegemonic and discriminatory practices that non-dominant populations encounter. These research efforts increase sensitivity to the unique understanding of leisure in ways that do not create/reinforce marginalization due to gender, sexual orientation, or their intersection with other relevant social categories such as race and class. In addition, as an advocate for community social justice, He also investigates how to use advocacy, activism, service-learning, community engagement, and agency partnerships to create unique learning opportunities for individuals (students, faculty, and community members) and institutions (university, community agencies, and government), increasing the quality, level, and number of services in a given community.
